I remember the exact moment that, as a kid, I realized that every single person I saw had an internal life, a self, as real to them, and as important to them, as mine was to me. It was kind of a shock to discover that I wasn't the only one. Do you remember that moment? Did you feel the shock too? In some ways it's nearly as startling and impenetrable as the moment you first realize that death will someday arrive. On that note I was well-guarded for my early years: somehow I became convinced that at the end of life old women turned into young male babies, and old men turned into young female babies, and each started again as the other gender. It still seems like a pretty reasonable theory, and I secretly hope it's true.
